SMITH COLLEGE PRAXIS INTERNSHIP
We are Book & Plow Farm, a production vegetable farm serving the larger 5-College Community. The farm strives to sustain and nourish the academic community by growing and providing high quality produce, to act as an educational resource through discourse and direct action around food, food security and sustainability, and to act in the best interest of the natural ecosystem and replenish the soil for long term sustainability.
As a B&P intern you will have the unique opportunity to be part of continuing to build up this new enterprise with a team of farmers, Will Lintilhac, Kaylee Brow, Maida Ives, Peter McLean and Tobin Porter-Brown. The interns will play a vital role in all aspects of vegetable production. Tasks will range from construction, crop care (cultivation, weeding, and watering), harvesting, and post-harvest handling (packing and delivery).
Aside from vegetable production, the Book & Plow Farm intern will be invited to engage in the community that comes with the farm through potlucks, outdoor movie screenings, swimming holes visits, field trips, t shirt making, and the list goes on.
It is not required for a Book & Plow intern to have prior farming experience but applicants need to be aware that farming can be physically challenging and you might be pleasantly tired at the end of the day. Farm days go from 8am to 5pm with an hour for lunch. An ideal candidate will enjoy working outside (it can get hot in the summer), has a willingness to do the task at hand, will like to work with others, and have a sense of humor.
